A Wall Worth Building
Building a wall is a phrase that takes on a whole new meaning in today’s world. It is ironic that we needed to build a wall in our new space, but, one, we believed worth building!
We are located in a corner suite on the top floor of Building 1 at the Tri-Main Center. Our space has great light and an open reception and conference area. It also includes a kitchenette or break room area.
You may think - how great - what easy access to water, coffee and snacks! Or you may think any of the following: What a mess! Look at all that stuff! Are those Starbursts? And, what exactly is that cow cup and why is it in a professional office?
The panoply of emotions and thoughts an open kitchen area evokes spans the spectrum. And you never know what the next guest will think, but rest assured, they will think something, whether good or bad. This random and distracting commentary led us to build a wall enclosing the kitchen area.
For any business owner moving into new space, if you need to embark on modifying the space you have chosen, be prepared. You will be asked to leave your space during the construction. Plastic will envelop everything including the kitchen sink! A proper, to scale, blueprint drawing by an AIA Architect is critical. Request it, Review it, Approve it, and make sure it fits in your budget. Check in on the progress, make sure it is built to your specifications and the blueprint. Do not try and work from the office while the wall is being built. Dust and noise, two (2) simple words that do not equal a successful day at the office!
Once the steel frame is built, and the drywall secured to it, wait for the painter to come in and finish off the job. If at any time, there are variances from the blueprint, speak up, demand alterations, and pay for the expected not the unexpected. Reviewing the matching paint is critical to a harmonious visual experience. Approving moulding or vinyl bases should not be overlooked. This is your work space, make sure it works for you.
From the drawing to the final coat of paint, own this, and it should provide you with a better work space and hopefully create more efficiency. Build your wall to complete your space, create privacy, and keep them guessing on what is on the other side!
Remember, no construction project is too small, pay for it only after you are happy with the end result, and stay engaged the entire process. This will minimize mistakes and ultimately help you move forward with a happier work environment knowing you built a wall but created a new scene in the story that is your business.
Our wall will be on display at our Open House on January 10th. We hope you will stop in to see what is on the other side!
