Legacies

Heartbreaking news comes to all of us at times. It is as prevalent in the animal companion space as the human realm. Today, our mascot’s mom, Babaloo, passed away at nearly 15 young years of age. It reminded us of the legacies we all create and that includes your business.

Respecting your business means planning for unexpected events. COVID is a great example.

It finally stopped at our house in mid December and its effects are still being felt. No walks, no daycare, no grocery store visits, and no holidays occurred for around 2 months. It was unexpected and random but we needed to react. Business meetings had to be canceled and holidays waited for next year. Luckily, that is behind us but the reality of a health condition weighed heavily on our sole proprietor shoulders.

The passing of Lafayette’s Mom this morning really caused us to pause, acknowledge her contributions as the first born Pied Barbet in modern times, and the fact that we continue to honor her legacy. She lives on in many of her offspring in Europe, Canada, and the US, including this Blog! What an honor to be a part of that legacy!

Your clients and projects are the legacy of your business. Respect them and make sure you have contingency plans in place should you be unable to work. It can be as simple as having a running contact list for all your current clients and projects. If you have employees, this is not such an arduous task. A sole proprietor needs the companionship of a book or journal or file to write this down. Take the time and embrace your legacy as you make it.

Today, we celebrate the legacy of Babaloo and all the accomplishments of her puppies around the world. We should all be so lucky to have so much to celebrate. Embrace the task now and ensure your business legacy can continue to celebrate its successes even when you are not available to orchestrate them.

Be well.
