A Better Response than ‘it’s above my pay grade.’

Recently, we had a plumber at our home to fix a clogged drain.  While outside retrieving more tools, our youngest dog, now 6 months old, snuck into the pantry, went under the sink, and stole the plumber’s gloves.  Upon return, the plumber said ‘Wow, he is a bold one.’

It was an entertaining display of boldness.  And it is a great metaphor for how we respond to certain situations. Being bold can be a good thing, if carried out without aggression or sarcasm.  And can be particularly helpful in certain responses.

We have been aware of several situations recently where a project manager among many different larger firms, is using the phrase ‘it’s above my pay grade.’  No statement is more self-deprecating.

First, when confronted with a question you do not have an answer for, there are many responses which do not call into question your own importance to your firm.  A better response would be ‘Let me get back to you on that.’  I always found people respected me more if I were honest and let them know I would like to get the right answer first, even if it took a little longer.

While we have been hearing the ‘above my pay grade’ phrase from associates at larger firms, there are times when a small business owner may also not have an immediate answer.  The best example is a retailer who relies on distributors for the products they offer. These distributors do not and cannot carry every product offering. And not all offerings are made available to every distributor.

Often, the retailer needs to ask the distributor for confirmation of whether or not the retailer can provide the customer with their request.  It is just the manner in which business is conducted. It is not a reflection of the shop owner’s ability to be the decision maker. Acknowledging this and allowing the customer to understand the process usually will result in a more educated buyer who now accepts they cannot get everything they want.

As the saying goes, the truth is out there.  Take the time to provide correct answers to questions you either do not know the answer to or where you cannot control the outcome.  You are in the decision making channel, make sure you do not minimize that position.  Be bold like the puppy, always exude a demeanor that entrusts confidence in your abilities to influence outcomes.

Be well.
