Finding the ‘Right’ Teammate

Recently. In our Professional Women’s Group, we discussed the concept of unconscious bias. It was eye opening to note how many times we choose to partner with people just like ourselves. But is that always the right approach?

Most business owners I have discussed this topic with over the years tell me they seek the most qualified candidate and then the one who will fit in the best. These are the top two criteria I used for assembling my women’s group. But was it the best approach?

There is always something we can learn by working with talented people who do not always fit the mold and feel of our team. We can always learn much from them, and likely it will help us growing as individuals and as a team. Someone with a different political ideology may be able to share insight that we were unable to see without their view and voice. Or someone from a different childhood experience can widen our understanding.

When it is time for you to expand the partnerships and consultants you work with or time to hire a temporary or full time employee., think outside the box, challenge yourself. Positive growth may likely be the outcome, both on a personal basis and a team basis.

Making A Point added a new teammate this past week. As our mascot, The Marquis de Lafayette, turned eight years old recently, we faced the inevitabke truth that he is getting older and is considered a senior dog. Despite his age, he continues to point, jump, run, and swim without a care in the world. But, having lost a Barbet at age eight, we decided to err on the side of caution.

Adding a teammate is about finding the right candidate as you define that and knowing the right time to bring them aboard. We were lucky to bring over a nephew of Laffey’s who is already pointing and showing his wild child side. He is active and loves the ball toys, just like his Uncle. We wanted many of these traits so our Blogs can continue to be inspired by sporting dog antics.

Please welcome the Duc de Lauzun or Zunë for short. He has a lot to lean but a lot to contribute. We are confident with our research and assessment, we did make the ‘right’ choice.

be well.
