Who You Gonna Call?
In today’s digital world, it is easy to overlook the importance of making a phone call. Words still matter and the spoken ones even more, at times.
Early in my banking career, it was commonplace to be welcomed to a new position with a desk, a phone, and a phone book. The internet was not what it is today. So, we all used old fashioned methods of contacting businesses to find new clients. We asked friends and family for referrals, we knocked on doors, and we picked up the phone and tried everything to get past the firm gatekeeper and reach a decision maker. It was not easy but it was personal and speaking directly to a decision maker was often a success to be celebrated in and of itself.
Even in today’s world, there are times or events that require making a phone call. If you are altering your payment or income stream or that of a vendor, client, consultant, pick up the phone. Explaining through live conversation sets a professional and respectful tone. Changing how you do business with someone, especially if the relationship is years in the making, deserves a live conversation. Otherwise, it can be perceived as unprofessional as well as disrespectful. And it can leave a colleague frustrated, hurt, mad, or upset.
In these times of uncertainty and of supply chain issues and economic woes, do your part in making someone’s understanding of a situation a better and kinder experience. Pick up the phone. It is the right thing to do, the brave thing to do, the professional thing to do, and the kind thing to do. And you likely will not lose a contact if handled properly.
In the dog sport world, hand signals or voice commands provide the dogs with direction. Choose your method of communication wisely. And, hopefully, those you are communicating with will treat you with the same kindness and respect going forward.
Be well.
