Work Like Someone Left the Gate Open
In the world of dog sports, there is a title that is given for dogs who run as fast as they can after a little white moving flag. It is called FastCat. Our blog dog photo is of Arlo, the Barbet, running as fast as he can when the gate opens.
For small businesses owners, we can also work like someone left the gate open. While I have written about many of the challenges Solopreneurs and Small Business Owners face, there are also many rewards to choosing this professional path. And like our buddy Arlo, we can take it on full speed ahead.
Making your own schedule is one of the top benefits to being your own boss. You are not beholden to a stated work day and expected to be in an office at a set time every day. Make your work day matter and schedule your time where you are most productive. You are in charge, no one else, and no corporate mandate or policy manual. Engage to be efficient not to just be present. And that approach often does not have set time frames. Make the most of your flexibility.
When someone asks you to attend a meeting, virtual or otherwise, at 6:30 am or 7:30 pm, you likely have the option to just say no. Own your time, do not be taken advantage of, and let others know what works for you. Unless it is your largest client or a new prospect you are aiming to impress, as the owner of your business, you have earned the right to set your own expectations with colleagues and clients.
One of the most liberating features I have found out on my own, is the ability to be casual and wear jeans. The stuffy suit, the high heels, the uncomfortable blazer - all gone. In their place., you will find nice jeans, comfortable clogs or boots, colorful sweaters and casual shirts. And, of course, a signature style mosaic mask. It is surprising how inspiring comfort can be!
The last element of being your own boss that I embrace everyday is choice. The choice to take on a client or pass, the choice to decide you need to take a personal day, the choice to work from home, your backyard, or just not to work at all that day. Of course, choice may be impacted by deadlines or client expectations, but in the end, you are the boss and it is your choice.
Make sure you reap the benefits of owning your own business. Take the time, as your schedule may permit, and enjoy your decision. And, as they say, live, or in this case, work, like someone left the gate open! Join Arlo and bask in your me moment.
Be well.
