Commit or Just Quit
Times are different now than what most of us have experienced in our lifetime. Pandemics, wars, not really part of our lifetime vocabulary. So, amidst this chaos, when you find something that inspires you, commit.
Whether it is starting a new business, redefining an existing one, or joining a club, group, or Board, one word should be top of your mind - commitment. Defined by the Oxford Dictiornary as the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity and an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action either May apply to your own behavior and obligations.
If you join a club, find ways to use it and enjoy it. If you can’t, don’t commit; just quit. If you embark upon a Not for Profit Board, commit. Attend meetings, join a committee, be part of advancing its cause. If you can’t do this, don’t commit; just quit. If you join a group, particularly a work related group, attend the meetings, pay the dues, do not make the organizer spend valuable time chasing you down or becoming a collections business for your dues. If membership in that group is not for you, don’t commit; just quit.
Time seems even more precious than pre-pandemic times. Make sure you identify those past times that make sense for you. You need to be inspired and you need to contribute and commit. The cause, the group, the club takes on the identity of those supporting it. If you find yourself not committing, just quit, give your spot to someone who will commit and who will contribute. Move on to something else that your sense of duty finds you committing not evading.
Choosing to walk away from something is not always easy. But the signs are there - do you embrace the cause, do you attend the club, do you attend group meetings and contribute valuable dialogue, do you feel passion for the topic? Life can be short, embrace what inspires you and leave the other things to those whom it does inspire. Be respectful of the time organizers have invested, and either attend and involve yourself aka commit or just quit. In the long run, you will be respected more for not wasting other people’s valuable time!
Be like our flying dog, commit to the action!
Be well.
