Lifting Yourself Up
Confidence, born with it or a learned behavior? Or perhaps both?
Recently, a few colleagues and I were discussing the topic of confidence. All of us have always been confident in our chosen professions. We discussed the drive, the passion, the success we have all enjoyed. We even wondered aloud where it actually came from at times. But, no doubt, we all agreed we were all confident women.
So, what are the common traits among us that helped us rise above and be confident as leaders? First, is the passion and the drive to compete and succeed. Make no mistake, a competive nature will always propel and push you to try harder, work harder, reach farther. A desire to make your mark and a dedication to achieve your goals are essential to become a confident leader.
A surprising aspect of our conversation surrounded the reading of books. We spent some time discussing what books we have read recently, are reading, and have planned to read. Author Stephen King was quoted as saying ‘Books are a uniquely portable magic’. If your wish is to build your confidence and become a stronger leader, read. Read to improve your knowledge of your trade, read fiction to keep the magic of life mysterious, read self help books to support your daily behavior, and, most of all, read to educate, amuse, and calm yourself. At times, you may not find a better friend. A good book will inspire and nourish your soul.
We may not be able to control where we have come from, if our family name helps or hurts our chances of success, but we can control how best we educate ourselves to earn the respect as a leader from our colleagues. Be like the dog in our blog photo, believe in yourself, educate yourself, and watch your confidence soar.
Be well.
