Changing Your Followers

Our business is about to undergo a transformation. Our focus will become our soon to be launched book, Making A Point - A Business Field Companion. To successfully make this change in focus, we are addressing our Social Media accounts.

It should be no surprise to any reader that social media accounts follow algorithms set by their maker. If you click on a new kitchen image that comes across your feed, suddenly home makeover and contractor pages are being recommended to you. One innocent click on a pretty picture now has your feed filled with suggestions on new kitchens, contractors who specialize in kitchens and companies that make cabinets and accessories for kitchens. At times, it seems endless. However, using this to your advantage may help you and your business pivot in a new direction.

As our company moves to launching our book, based on our five years of blog writing about being a small business owner, we want to capture organizations that may benefit from our business commentary in the book form. We have noticed several of our social media accounts still contain mostly associations from our previous banking career. That needs to change, so what can we do about it?

We began identifying organizations that could benefit from our book. Firms such as chambers of commerce, industrial development agencies, small business centers, along with business schools and their faculty. We are focused on those in the state of New York and the Maryland/DC/Virginia corridor as we often visit there. We began liking their Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, and LinkedIn Pages. And to our satisfaction, several began following us back. What a great feeling that was to see our numbers increasing and with the right type of followers given our new journey.

If your firm wishes to attract a certain subsection of your prospects, find organizations that work with them and begin following them on all your social media pages. Start posting a few times a day, and, if appropriate, tag them in relevant posts. It may take some time for the social media platforms to change your algorithm but when they do, hopefully, it will bring with it the changes you were targeting.

Spend some time on researching the best followers for your firm’s services or products. Begin posting often about relevant topics around that target profile. Take advantage of these platforms and watch your pages flourish.

Be well.
